PROJECT 4 - synthesis
"Synthesis means to combine a number of different pieces into a whole. Synthesis is about concisely summarizing and linking different sources in order to review the literature on a topic, make recommendations, and connect your practice to the research."

As the last project for our last year in the Apollo program, Renee Ellis and Emily Diaz came together in one final hurrah to produce work we loved. As the last standard, we were assigned to synthesize two or more ideas to produce something new, and even before we had even officially started the assignment, we had both looked at each other and knew what we wanted to do.
English
For the last four years, we have both endeavored to watch all of the Marvel movies and shows available to us, and together we’ve watched 33 movies/TV shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It almost felt like fate that for our last chance to do something we loved in Apollo, it should be something we’ve both loved and have developed a friendship over. For over a month, we have synthesized ourselves and the MCU. For us both, we were able, finally in our senior year, to take a minute and think for ourselves. We structured questions and inquiries that we were curious about and took this opportunity to understand who we are before we leave off for college. On the other hand, we also looked back through our favorite characters and separately were able to understand why they were our favorites and develop many ideas as to why they’ve impacted our lives. For each subject, we honed our passions to produce our works of ourselves and the MCU and to show how impactful a couple of superheroes can have a real impact on real people in this universe.
For the English portion of our project, we decided to have a little bit of an artistic interpretation of our assignment, rather than our typical writing assignment. Together, we realized music in the MCU movies has been something that helps shape the movies as they transform and tell the story. Inspired by that, we decided that we wanted to create our playlists to help tell the stories of our characters. In that, we synthesize our taste in music and take some of our favorites and develop a playlist fit to tell the story of our characters. Eventually, we took this a step further and decided that we wanted to create poems to kind of go along with our playlist. The poems that we wrote are from the perspectives of our characters telling their stories, and our playlists are meant to be listened to while we read the poems. As the soundtracks of the movies help shape the tone of the movies, our playlists are fit to enhance the stories of our characters.

SOCIAL STUDIES
For the final portion of our project, we decided to have a little bit more structure to our wild imagination and have some sort of explanation and connection sheet. In our process, we had both drafted up many questions to help investigate ourselves and investigate our relationship with Marvel. We probably have written a total of a few essays during our process, but in the end, we reviewed our work and studied what we had written, and drafted up our ideas for our superheroes. In the end, we decided to answer 3 big questions to help explain our characters and who they are to us. Simply, we wanted to explain how we created a representation of our characters; how we are represented in the characters, and how we see our characters withstanding our life experiences.
ART
Rather than us having to simply lump all of our work together and bring two different people together to create a character to fit both of our needs, we both decided we wanted to give each other some artistic freedom for this portion of the project. As the course of our project went on, we realized that this project was an excellent opportunity to find out who each of us was through the MCU, but for each other, we were able to continuously meet up and build each other’s confidence and ideas to push the limits for one final time. Together, we were able to bounce ideas off each other so that only we would understand the ability we both possess. We had to let go of this idea of “we are partners, we must create one solid product to envelop ourselves in”. In the end, that idea would’ve survived the trek that we both went on our paths to develop the artistic interpretation of each of our characters. Renee had leaned into her passion to have a visual piece of art as the best way to bring a character to life. She had sketched and synthesized her multiple inspiration from her own culture and passions to fully process and visualize the idea of Raiyn/Indigo on a few pieces of paper sketched by Renee’s own hands. Emily had also leaned into her passion to crochet a piece of her own character’s costume. Emily crocheted a pair of gloves as part of Selena Olivianora Serpentine’s ensemble which was heavily inspired by the Victorian era. As we had both soon come to realize, we understood that we were both very different people and our characters couldn’t be further away on the spectrum of Marvel. In the end, we realized that this was a reflection of our relationship as we produced characters who couldn’t be more different, but somehow could be the greatest of friends.
