PROJECT 3-Reasoning
"Reason is the capacity of consciously making sense of things, applying logic, and adapting or justifying practices, institutions, and beliefs based on new or existing information."

This project was inspired by my interest and curiosity of fashion. Fashion has always been something that I was drawn to due to my mother. My mother loves shoes! She instilled her love of clothes and shoes into me at a young age. However, I wanted to push the project past just loving clothes and shoes. I wanted to study how fashion has catapulted changing in America. There are so many examples of fashion being the result of a political or social movement. There have even been political and social movements due to fashion and freedom of expression. The project was fun and very interesting at the same time. It is always a challenge to center projects on certain rights and beliefs like freedom of expression, but that difficulty, I believe, allows for me to learn more.
ArT
My art project was very fun for me. Originally, I believe I wanted to create fashion designs, but I then decided to venture in a more artistic way to be able to convey as much research as possible. I decided to paint fashion magazine fronts of different decades that had prominent fashion expressions. The decades that I chose were the 90s, the 2000s, and the 2010s. I think that the huge century changes and cultural identity and issues of the 90s made the fashion and expression very expressive during that time. The same is similar to the 2010s. The adjustment to the new times, the technology boom, and unfortunately the tragedies of the 2000s really made people's fashion, their clothes, and the things that they wear very important to them and to the culture of America because it really helped the adjustment of those times. Lastly, I felt as though the 2010s were defined by the extreme political tensions in the country throughout the entire decade. There were deep divides with many Americans and it was definitely shown through the fashion and the posters of that time. From campaign slogans to anti-democrat, or anti-republican sayings and designs to even saying, slogans, and designs that revolve just around the plethora of political topics that are ever present throughout the decade. The use of expressio enduring this time was less unifying and definitely more divisive. With the start of the pandemic in the last year of the decade, the division within the country was very strong. However, the contrast between the three decades was just as important to show as the similarities. I worked to make sure that I reflected the decade in the paintings and that I did my best to reflect how the political and social movements either impacted or were impacted by fashion and expression. My reasoning was shown through the relation to the words and the designs and the context of the painting. For example, in the 2010s paintings, there are worlds and posters that people wore and used to express their beliefs behind the White House. The relation is that these ideas and words were affected by the actions of the White House but they also affected the actions of the White House. The reason why they wore what they wore was because of the White House, and using their expression was a part of the decisions of the government. Each of the paintings was painted in acrylic painting and they are each inspired by actual magazines and/or pictures from the decade they are based in.
Englsih
For English I did something different than the other two classes. Since I am a junior this year, it is a requirement by the school to fulfill the requirements for SmartFutures. SmartFutures is a program that our school utilizes to help students prepare for their futures. It asks a variety of questions, it has activities and lessons to fill out, and for English they give us three activities to choose from to complete for English 3. I got to choose whether I wanted to write a college application essay, a resume, or a college research paper. I choose to write a resume and a college application essay because I already have done research on what colleges I want to go to, and I kind of already have a choice on which college I would say yes to. Writing a resume and an application essay will give me an opportunity to write something that I will definitely need in the future, and I can add it to the college research that I have already done. Because SmartFutures is something completely separate from Apollo, I didn’t have to worry about using the thinking skill for this project. I simply wrote my application essay on my experience at Central and moving to the district, and I wrote a universal resume.
SOCIAL STUDIES
My Social Studies product was tied to my product for art. I created a Keynote presentation that explains all of the reasoning and ideas that went into each painting. I went in depth about the different fashion movements and ideas at the time. I also explained how fashion has become such a political and social catalyst for change and advancement in America. For example, I wrote for the 90s decade,
“Graffiti- Is vandalism, my many small
artists, and people in inner cities communities
used graffiti to express their ideas, feelings,
and art with the world. On buildings and
public property it is illegal, but on clothes and
on personal property it is a form of
expression. It is important because it was the
one of the only ways that people who were
disadvantaged were able to share their ideas.”
Another thing that I added to my Social Studies component was actual court cases that support and explain why fashion has been so heavily involved in society. For many years people can see fashion as a freedom of expression and have challenged the courts to make sure that their freedom isn't being taken away or dismissed. Some of the court cases that I looked at were Tinker v. Des Moines, Chandler v. McMinnville School Dist., and several other examples. I also continued to look into how these court cases relate to school environments versus public environments. It is very different expressing your rights in public versus in school or government offices and buildings. Because I was taking a civics class, looking at all of these examples and explaining the reasons as to why and how they related to my topic all helped me to educate myself on this topic but it also helped me to create a better project. I am so glad that I chose this topic for reasoning. It allowed me to look deeper into the research and into my thinking to better understand fashion and its impact on society.
